By ensuring that our notes are atomic, meaning that they refer to our understanding of one basic fact or belief, we can more easily recombine them into novel patterns.
Larger notes are also more rigidly hierarchical. While this allows us to easily see the main relationships, it does nothing to help expose emergent thoughts and linkages. By linking our notes through various relations as a cyclic graph we can use our existing knowledge in novel ways.
